N.J. Diocese Pays $610K to Settle Claim it Allowed Sexually Abusive Priest to Remain in Ministry

In what is believed to be one of New Jersey’s largest individual settlements involving sexual abuse by a priest, the Diocese of Trenton has paid $610,000 to a Burlington County man who was molested for more than a decade by the former head of the diocese’s youth group.

Jacobs & Crumplar attorney Raeann Warner, who represented the victim, had this to say regarding the case:

“I’m happy for Chris that he has gotten some measure of justice. I’m thankful to New Jersey for having excellent Judges and fair case law which allowed this case to be brought. But Chris’s case could only be brought because Chris had repressed memories.

There are many survivors in New Jersey who do not have access to justice because of the rigid statute of limitations that was in place when they were hurt as children. I hope New Jersey will pass a civil window which will allow time-barred claims to be brought and allow many other survivors, even those who have always remembered the abuse, to have some measure of justice.”
